These Trees

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

spring has sprung, etc.

That tree to the left… it looks pretty doesn't it? Utterly gorgeous against the bright blue sky that represents what I see every day in North Carolina. These trees are all over Cary and were apparently brought over from China and called the “Flowering Bradford Pear.” They are extremely hardy plants, having a high level of tolerance for pollution, and are characterized by white flowers in spring and deep mahogany leaves in the fall. These particular trees line each side of the road all the way through downtown, down Walnut Street, along Old Cary Parkway… There is at least one in every front yard- including my own. I am lucky because I have two. They are literally every where you look.I strongly suspect that they were solely chosen for the beauty of the white bushy flowers. And those white flowers? This is the part I love.”Characterized by greenish-white flowers which smell like a cross
between old semen, dirty vagina, and rotting fried shrimp. Common
throughout the South, these trees are pleasantly located near eateries
and other fine establishments. -urban dictionary”
Yeah. The trees. Pleasantly located in my yard? They smell like semen.

Another informative documentary from Robbo Ranx of BBC 1Xtra, this time looking at the Bobo Dread community. Robbo pays a visit to the Bull Bay Camp (where the Bobo community is primarily located) in Jamaica, and looks at the Bobo belief system, their attitudes towards women, and the increasing number of artists communicating Bobo beliefs through their music.
